This Just in… JTV’s trafic spikes indicate the power of streaming illegal content?

I was doing some further investigation on justin.tv’s perceived traffic increase when I ran into this little ditty:

There may be less porn now, but other illegal content now graces Justin.tv’s servers. Right now I’m watching a stream of Fox Sports Net West’s broadcast of the San Diego Padres playing the Los Angeles Angels. Last night, more than 2,000 people watched the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers play. Given Major League Baseball’s draconian online reporting rules — no more than seven photos from any game; audio and video clips can be a maximum of two minutes and can’t be streamed live — we doubt the MLB is happy about this.”
It’s just a matter of time before the FCC come knocking at the door. To get a idea of what JTV is doing numbers-wise I heade over the compete.com and alexa.com. According to Alexa JTV’s numbers seemed to spike around February. This is about the time we started to see the illegal sports content being streamed from the site. If you scroll down alexa’s page You’ll notice that US traffic at 18%. This number represents the total traffic from US viewers and it’s pretty poor. So poor in fact that no US based advertisers would touch it with 82% of it’s traffic outside the target market. Ustream’s rating of 34.1% is not much better and while JTV enjoys a traffic rating of 4,497. Ustream’s rating of 8,078 give’s you more US viewers for it’s numbers.
Head over the Compete.com for a real world analysis of JTV & Ustream and it’s quite evident. Ustream’s growth is steady and sure. JTV’s is littered with traffic spikes that indicate growth from the rebroadcast of illegal content. My money is on Ustream.
Etard indicated that he had contacted various sports outlets in regards to JTV’s illegal streaming activities. Whether he’s been successful in getting their attention is uncertain. One thing we do know for sure. JTV will have to end the illegal broadcast by either stopping it or shutting down. It will be interesting to see which course of action is taken.

The rebroadcasting of network content is going to need to be sorted out for sure. If I were a paying customer of say a pay per view sports event and realized that I could just navigate my way over to JTV to catch the same event — for free — I would be none too happy and would make my displeasure known with a request for credit from the PPV provider. If that happened a few times I’m sure notice would be taken.
The fact that ESPN or the NCAA or NBA or ABC or FOX or any of the other networks that have broadcast the events are presumably quiet surprises me. I often wonder how the sponsors, the advertisers that spend millions to promote their products during these games feel about it? Are they happy to have free advertising over on JTV, even if the quality is less than stellar? If they get one sale from a JTV channel, do they revel in the fact that they paid $0 dollars for the promotion?
I don’t know — is it possible that the networks are gearing up for a “one fell swoop” kind of fight with JTV that will take the guys right down with more than a cease and desist? They seem to feel pretty confident in their own TOS, using it as a disclaimer when asked questions about why they allow the rebroadcasts on their channels.
Me? Well, I’m the nervous type and those channels would keep me up at night.
This much I’ll say … I’ve worked very hard and spent a lot of money these past six months to put together a fun cooking broadcast each night on JTV and on my own domain powered by JTV and to see it all end because of an ethics issue would be a shame.
But life moves on.

Justopia I believe that in this instance of turning the other cheek the most likely culprit is the VC’s. Justin mentioned in his Kiko post-mortem

As a former interactive agency worker who has been through and IPO and as a consultant to at least 3 start ups. As a creative Director in the publishing world during a hostile takeover I can safely say having VC interference in your company is a, “DO NOT WANT!!!” I’ve seen it destroy corporate spirit as well as cannibalize company resources. These guys are getting railroaded into performing to attract perspective buyers but I have a feeling in this “me too” space of personal broadcasting, financial success may be much more difficult to realize.

First of all ETARD, you would still be on jtv if it wasnt for them giving u the boot for being a complete jerk… I still dont understand why you wanted to broadcast on a site where the majority of the people including the staff didnt like you anyway, and you had no content to offer other than sitting in your room talkin smack. 2nd.. I have never seen a group of people talk so much about and visit a site so much that they claim to dislike.. If you dont like the site, dont visit it. I remember the mass “exodus” to ustream by ecv and all of his followers among others.. They had nothing to talk about and were back within 2 weeks. etard, jtv cannot be sued for the content people broadcast on their site. maybe you should read up on jtv’s TOS.
jtv doesnt encourage people to broadcast tv, and they are more than happy to shut down a channel if the owner of the material asks for it to be shut down
jtv’s policy on copyrighted material is the same as youtube, over 90% of the videos on youtube are copyrighted and most of them are pirated but does youtube get sued? NO, and neither will jtv

What i find most sad about the turd is the fact that he demands respect from everyone in his channel (so he demands in the rules he has set), but he gives none back. If a person accidentally disagrees or (god forbid) actually happen to have a little more knowledge then he has in computers, he or some of his lame mods will swing the ban hammer.
You also claim to be the top broadcaster at JTV, im sorry to inform you that you were mediocre at best. You had a steady base of around 18 viewers, maybe a peak of 30 now and then. You kept banning people for nothing and acted like the turd you are, so people actually lost interest. I can name alot of other featured broadcasters that offeres alot more then you ever gave JTV (and no, they dont have to act sexy etc to do it, they were actually interesting.)
